Chevy Equinox Vs. Honda CR-V: Small Footprints with Big-Time Hauling Abilities

By Justin Cupler | March 17th, 2019

Compact crossovers have officially taken over as the primary family-hauling vehicle, leaving sedans and minivans in their wake. The 2019 Chevy Equinox and 2019 Honda CR-V offer tons of space, features, and versatility sedans and minivans cannot, but which is better for our Saginaw, Michigan area buyers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Chevy Equinox and Honda CR-V are some of the newest compact crossovers on the market, as Chevy redesigned the Equinox for 2018, and Honda did the same for the CR-V in 2017. Both models feature sharper lines than before and plenty of upscale outward features, including large wheels and LED lights.

Up front, both the CR-V and Equinox feature simple designs, but the CR-V is looks more refined with its trickle-down styling from the Accord. Around back, the 2019 Equinox’s traditional horizontally oriented taillights may appeal to more buyers than the vertically oriented CR-V lights — not that the latter is some over-the-top design, though.

The 2019 Chevy Equinox measures 183.1 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 65.4 inches high. It rides on a 107.3-inch wheelbase and has 7.6 to 8 inches of ground clearance.

The 2019 CR-V is shorter at 180.6 inches long, but it is wider at 73 inches wide and taller at 66.1 to 66.5 inches high. The CR-V’s wheelbase checks in at 104.7 inches, and it offers a bit more ground clearance at 7.8 to 8.2 inches.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Equinox

  • Newest looks in the crossover realm
  • Traditional-looking taillights for less adventurous buyers

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Smaller and easier to handle
  • Refined nose borrowed from the Accord

Interior

As the newest of the crossovers, the 2019 Equinox and 2019 CR-V have the latest in interior styling and tech. In terms of creativity, the Equinox gets a leg up with its two-tone dashboard in its upper trims, but the CR-V is not far behind with its slick dash accents that break things up a bit.

On the tech side of things, the 2019 CR-V is well-equipped with a standard 5-inch touchscreen, a seven-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, and more. That said, the 2019 Equinox is even better equipped with its standard 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, in-car Wi-Fi, and much more.

Inside, the 2019 Equinox’s front seats offer 40 inches of headroom, 40.9 inches of legroom, 57.2 inches of shoulder room, and 54.2 inches of hip room. The CR-V’s front seats boast an extra 0.1 inches of headroom, 0.9 inches of legroom, 0.7 inches of shoulder room, and 0.9 inches of hip room.

In its rear seats, the 2019 Equinox has 38.5 inches of headroom, 39.7 inches of legroom, 55.5 inches of shoulder room, and 51.7 inches of hip room. The CR-V comes up short in hip room by 2.2 inches, but it offers an extra 0.7 inches of headroom and legroom, and 0.1 inches of shoulder room.

Cargo room plays a huge role in compact crossovers, as they general take the place of minivans designed to haul people and cargo. The 2019 Chevy Equinox delivers a respectable 29.9 cubic feet with the seats upright and 63.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The CR-V is a class leader in cargo room at 39.2 cubes with the seats up and 75.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Equinox

  • Tons more standard tech
  • More rear hip room
  • Upscale two-tone dash layout in Premium trim

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Roomier rear seats
  • Massive cargo area

Performance

The 2019 Chevy Equinox comes standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This boosted four-pot pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the front wheels or all four wheels with optional all-wheel drive.

Buyers looking for more pep can get the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that cranks out 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels. Buyers can opt for all-wheel drive with this more powerful engine.

Topping the range is a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder that cranks out 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. This torquey diesel engine pairs with a standard six-speed automatic transmission that pushes power to the front wheels. Buyers can also get optional all-wheel drive.

The 2019 Honda CR-V comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. In the EX and higher trims, the 2019 CR-V comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive. Both engines are also available with all-wheel drive.

For buyers who need to tow, the Equinox can pull up to a 3,500-pound trailer when equipped with the 2.0-liter engine. The 2019 CR-V falls well short with a 1,500-pound towing capacity.

As compact crossovers become frequent daily commuter cars, fuel economy has become more important. The Equinox with its base 1.5-liter engine delivers up to 26 mpg city, 32 highway, and 28 combined. This matches the fuel economy delivered by the base CR-V with the 2.4-liter engine. The CR-V EX and higher trims see their fuel economy jump to 28 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 combined.

The 2019 Equinox with the peppy 2.0-liter engine delivers up to 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined. With the 1.6-liter diesel engine, the Equinox’s fuel economy hits an impressive 28 mpg city, 39 highway, and 32 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Equinox

  • Huge towing advantage
  • Torque-heavy and fuel-efficient diesel option
  • All-turbo engine lineup
  • Potent 2.0-liter engine

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Better gasoline mpg
  • More off-road capability, but still not much
