Chevy Cruze Vs. Honda Civic: Big Cabins in Tiny Wrappers. Which is Best?

By Justin Cupler | March 9th, 2019

The compact-car segment has seen tons of change in recent years. Not only have compact vehicles grown in size and roominess, but they have also become far more stylish than before. The 2019 Honda Civic and 2019 Chevrolet Cruze fit this description perfectly with their great looks and roomy cabins. Which of these compact sedans is better for our Midland, Michigan buyers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The compact segment is no longer filled with the unstylish econoboxes it once was. Today, automakers pour a ton of resources into these lower-prices rigs to give them amazing looks that age well over the years. Two great examples of this are the 2019 Chevy Cruze and the 2019 Honda Civic.

Both the Civic and the Cruze are available as either a hatchback or a sedan, giving buyers the choice of a sleek two-box design or the sharp and sporty look of a hatchback. The 2019 Cruze takes on a slightly sportier look in its base format with its pointed nose, chiseled grille, and razor-sharp angles.

The Honda Civic has a more refined look as its styling trickles down from the midsize accord. But the Civic has a few wilder-styled models in its Sport, Si, Sport Touring, and Type R models that feature tons of sporty appearance upgrades, including wing spoilers, underbody spoilers, exclusive wheels, and more.

The Chevy Cruze sedan is 183.7 inches long, 70.5 inches wide, and 57.4 inches high. Its wheelbase checks in at 106.3 inches. The 2019 Honda Civic sedan is 182.7 inches long, 70.9 inches wide, and 55.7 inches high. The Civic sedan rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase.

The 2019 Chevy Cruze Hatchback is 175.3 inches long, 70.5 inches wide, and 57.7 inches high. It rides on the same 106.3-inch wheelbase as its sedan sibling. The 2019 Civic Hatchback is 177.9 inches long, 70.8 inches wide, and 56.3 to 56.5 inches high. Its wheelbase measure 106.3 inches.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Cruze

  • Sportier-looking base model
  • Smaller hatchback footprint

Advantage: 2019 Honda Civic

  • Refined, Accord-inspired looks
  • Smaller sedan footprint
  • Aggressive-looking performance models

Interior

Like the exterior, compact cars’ interiors are more stylish than even, and the 2019 Cruze and 2019 Civic both fit this bill. The 2019 Chevy Cruze’s interior is simple in its lower trims, but its higher trim levels features tons of upscale materials, even on its dash, that give it an added sense of luxury.

The Civic’s base trim is also simple and gets more elegant as you go through the trim levels. Unlike the Cruze, though, the Civic never reaches a high level of luxury and style. The Civic does, however, have the Si and Type R models that feature heavily bolstered seats and sporty accents to set it off.

What the Civic and Cruze share are high levels of technology. The Honda Civic comes standard with desirable features like a 5-inch touchscreen, a 160-watt audio system, Bluetooth, and more. The Cruze beats its with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and tons more.

Inside, the 2019 Cruze sedan and hatchback’s front seats offer 38.9 inches of headroom, 42 inches of legroom, 54.8 inches of shoulder room, and 53.1 inches of hip room. The 2019 Civic sedan and hatchback’s front seats have an extra 0.4 inches of headroom, 0.3 inches of legroom, 2.2 inches of shoulder room, and 0.6 inches of hip room.

In the rear, the sedan and hatchback versions of each vehicle have their own measurements. The Cruze sedan’s rear seats offer 37.3 inches of headroom, 36.1 inches of legroom, 53.7 inches of shoulder room, and 51.9 inches of hip room. The Civic sedan’s rear seats come up short in headroom and legroom by 0.2 and 4.6 inches, respectively, but it trumps the Cruze’s rear seats by 1.3 inches of legroom and 1.3 inches of shoulder room.

The 2019 Cruze Hatchback’s rear seats have 37.8 inches of headroom, 36.1 inches of legroom, 53.7 inches of shoulder room, and 51.9 inches of hip room. The Civic Hatchback’s rear seats come up short by 0.4 inches in headroom, 0.1 inches of legroom, and 3.1 inches of hip room, but they offer an extra 1.3 inches of shoulder room.

Cargo room is important in the compact sedan and hatchback segments, as these vehicles often haul families on vacation and weekend getaways. The Cruze sedan offers 13.9 cubic feet in the LT and Premier trims, and 14.8 cubic feet in the L and LS trims.  The Civic sedan has a leg up on the Cruze in the cargo-hauling department with 14.7 cubic feet in the Touring trim and 15.1 cubic feet in all other trims.

The 2019 Chevy Cruze Hatchback offers 22.7 cubes of cargo room in with its seats up and 47.2 cubes with the seats folded. The Civic Hatchback comes up short with 22.6 to 46.2 cubic feet of cargo room.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Cruze

  • Standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Larger standard touchscreen
  • Higher levels of lucury in higher trims
  • Roomier interior in hatchback model

Advantage: 2019 Honda Civic

  • Roomier sedan interior
  • More trunk space
  • Aggressive interior in high-performance models

Performance

Compact sedans once came with just a single engine, but in today’s world of fine-tuned options, many of them offer multiple powerplants. The 2019 Chevy Cruze and 2019 Honda Civic both have a multiple engines to pick from to meet various buyers’ needs.

The 2019 Chevy Cruze comes standard with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. This power heads through a standard six-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

Buyers looking for more thrift can go with the optional 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine that produces 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. This engine mates with a nine-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the front wheels.

The 2019 Civic LX and Sport sedan comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. The Civic comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission for traditionalists, but there is also an optional continuously variable transmission that delivers a smooth drive and improved fuel economy.

Moving into the Civic EX, EX-L and Touring sedan adds a standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a Standard continuously variable transmission to help stretch its fuel economy.

The Civic Sedan also has a wild side in its Si trim that comes standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that cranks out 205 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This potent four-pot pairs with a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Civic Hatchback forgoes the sedan’s 2.0-liter engine and goes straight to the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This power heads through a standard CVT. In the Sport trim, Honda pushes the 1.5-liter engine to 180 horsepower and 177  pound-feet of torque — 162 pound-feet with the CVT. This engine pairs with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT.

The Civic Hatchback, like the sedan, has a wild side. Unlike the sedan model, the Hatchback’s wild side is the legendary Type R with 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque flowing from a 2.0-liter turbocharged i-VTEC engine. This power routes through a standard six-speed manual transmission and out to the front wheels.

Fuel economy is a focal point for compact sedans, and the Cruze and Civic excel in this area. The 2019 Cruze sedan delivers up to 30 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined with its standard 1.4-liter engine. With the 1.6-liter diesel engine, this jumps to up to 31 mpg city, 48 highway, and 37 combined.

The 2019 Honda Civic sedan with the 2.0-liter engine and six-speed manual transmission delivers up to 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. Add the CVT to the mix, and the Civic with the 2.0-liter engine jumps to up to 30 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined. Swapping in the 1.5-liter engine pushes the Civic Sedan to up to 32 mpg city, 42 highway, and 36 combined. Finally, the Civic Si sedan offers up to 28 mpg city, 38 highway, and 32 combined.

The 2019 Chevy Cruze Hatchback with its standard powertrain gets up to 28 mpg city, 38 highway, and 32 combined. With the 1.6-liter diesel engine gets up to 30 mpg city, 45 highway, and 35 combined.

The 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback with its standard powertrain — 1.5-liter and CVT — gets up to 31 mpg city, 40 highway, and 34 combined. Opting for the Civic Sport with the standard six-speed manual transmission delivers up to 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined. Combine the Sport trim with the optional CVT, and its fuel economy jumps to 30 mpg city, 36 highway, and 32 combined. Finally, the Civic Type R’s potent powertrain puts fuel economy in the back seat with its up to 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Cruze

  • More base horsepower
  • Big fuel economy number with diesel engine
  • Traditional automatic transmissions

Advantage:2019 Honda Civic

  • High mpg without diesel engine
  • Manual transmission option
  • Wild performance models
