Chevy Camaro Vs. Dodge Challenger

By Justin Cupler | May 14th, 2019

The Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger offer buyers great style and performance, but they cater to different groups of Saginaw buyers. Wondering which one is right for you? Continue reading our comparison of the 2019 Chevy Camaro and 2019 Dodge Challenger to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Camaro is fresh off a redesign that gave it a brand-new nose that gives this sharp-looking sports coupe an even more aggressive look. Plus, it puts extra separation between the LS and LT, and SS model. There is also the ZL1 model that takes the sporty look to an extreme.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger is a retro-modern muscle car that boasts loads of stylistic touches from yesteryear, including its rounded headlights, split grille, and split taillights. This puts the Challenger right in the wheelhouse of classic car fans without alienating those who prefer a more modern touch. Buyers looking for wildness equal to the Camaro ZL1 can opt for one of the Challenger’s Hellcat models and add the widebody package.

In size, the Challenger is significantly larger in every measurement. This gives it more room inside, which we will get to later, but it makes the Camaro far easier to park and zip through tight city traffic in.

Measurement 2019 Chevy Camaro 2019 Dodge Challenger Difference
Length 188.3 to 190.2 inches 197.5 to 197.9 inches -9.2 to -7.7 inches
Width 74.7 inches 75.7 to 78.3 inches -3.6 to -1 inch
Height 52.4 to 53.1 inches 57 to 57.5 inches -4.6 to -4.4 inches
Wheelbase 110.7 inches 116.2 inches -5.5 inches
Ground Clearance
4.5 to 5.2 inches
Curb weight 3,354 to 3.944 pounds 3,858 to 4,492 pounds -548 to -504 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Camaro

  • Modern muscle looks
  • Wild ZL1 model
  • Smaller and easier to handle

Advantage: 2019 Dodge Challenger

  • Ripped straight from the 1970s
  • Sick looking widebody package
  • Aggressive Hellcat look

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Chevy Camaro takes on a more toned-down look with plenty of black and light splashes of color to keep things interesting. The seats are heavily bolstered, especially in the ZL1 model, and the dash features sporty round air vents and an insert on the passenger’s side.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger also features a reserved cabin with plenty of black, but it sets off this sea of black with large silver sections on the center console, dash, and steering wheel. The Challenger also shows off its classic inspiration with a T0handle gear shifter. Like the Camaro, the Challenger boasts grippy seats, especially in its wild SRT Hellcat model.

Both muscle cars boast premium features to offset their timid cabins, including standard 7-inch touchscreens and advanced connectivity via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth audio streaming.

In terms of roominess, the larger Dodge Challenger takes the cake in every measurable, except front legroom. With its extra 3.2 inches of rear legroom and 7.1 cubes of luggage space, this makes it a better argument for folks with children.

Measurement 2019 Chevy Camaro 2019 Dodge Challenger Difference
Front headroom 36.6 to 38.5 39.3 -2.7 to -0.8 inches
Front legroom 42.7 to 43.9 42 +0.7 to +1.9 inches

Rear shoulder room 50.3 53.9 -3.6 inches
Rear hip room 45.7 47.8 -2.1 inches
Cargo room 9.1 cubic feet 16.2 cubic feet -7.1 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Camaro

  • More front-seat legroom\
  • The same standard features for less money

Advantage: 2019 Dodge Challenger

  • More family-friendly rear seat and trunk

Performance

Most classic muscle cars had their normal variants that featured lower-powered engine and ho-hum performance. In today’s Camaro and Challenger they feature lower-powered engine options, but they all deliver stellar performance numbers. No matter which engine you choose, there is not a boring Challenger or Camaro in sight.

The Camaro starts with a 275-horsepower 2.0liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sprints it to 60 mph in a surprising 5.1 seconds. The 335-horsepower V-6 shoots the Camaro to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds too. The 2019 Camaro SS gets a 455-horsepower V-8 that zips it to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Topping the range is a 650-horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged engine that rockets the 2019 Camaro to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger starts with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 305 horsepower there are no available 0-to-60 tests of this model, but it is same to assume a low-five-second range. Second in line is the R/T model’s 5.7-liter V-8 that produces 372 horsepower and jets it to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The R/T Scat Pack sprints to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds thanks to its 485-horsepower 6.4-liter V-8. Wildness kicks in at the top of the range with the SRT Hellcat and the SRT Hellcat Redeye, which use 717- and 797-horsepower supercharged 6.4-liter V-8 engines to sprint to 60 mph in 3.5 and 3.4 seconds, respectively.

In testing, it is clear these cars have different opinions on the importance of corners. The 2019 Camaro holds 1 g or more on the skid pad in nearly every trim, but the 2019 Challenger struggles to break 0.95 g.
